Stall Market A

Orkney Farmers' Market Stall
This concept was created as part of the visual development of Orkney, a prosperous coastal region within Auros of a Doomed Heart. The goal of the assignment was to design a marketplace stall that reflects the agricultural abundance, craftsmanship, and everyday culture of the region while contributing to a cohesive visual language for the wider setting.
The design focuses on a larger, established vendor stall specializing in locally produced food and farm goods. The structure is built around a lightweight timber framework covered with layered woven canopies that provide shelter from Orkney's frequent cloud cover and damp coastal weather. The fabric patterns introduce visual rhythm while helping distinguish the stall within the larger marketplace environment.
A significant part of the design process centered on storytelling through merchandise and supporting props. Fresh vegetables, root crops, herbs, dairy products, baskets, crates, and storage containers were carefully arranged to communicate both the prosperity of the region and the daily routines of its people. The inclusion of a goat and a small transport cart further reinforces the connection between local farming communities and market trade.
Rather than presenting the stall as a standalone object, the surrounding environment was treated as an extension of the design itself. Vegetation growing around the structure, uneven earthen pathways, and practical storage solutions help establish a sense of authenticity and long-term use. These details were intended to create the feeling that the stall is part of a living marketplace rather than a temporary display.
From a design perspective, the focus was on balancing functionality and visual appeal. The broad canopy silhouette creates a strong recognizable shape, while the arrangement of produce, containers, and supporting elements guides the viewer's eye through the composition. Material variation between fabric, wood, rope, vegetation, and food products was used to add richness and visual interest without compromising readability.
This piece contributes to the larger goal of defining Orkney not only through its landmarks and architecture, but through the ordinary spaces where people work, gather, and sustain their community. By exploring the daily life of merchants and farmers, the design helps communicate the region's prosperity, resilience, and deep connection to the land.
